Staying Connected when Traveling Internationally
One of the hardest parts about traveling is being disconnected from those still at home. Likely, with a smart phone in hand, it’s become easier than ever. Below are some things that will help you stay connected while you are traveling internationally.
Get international plan: most major phone carriers have some kind of international phone plan. If you travel internationally often, you may want to consider a long-term international plan. Otherwise, you can choose a package based on how long your trip will be or for a certain amount of minutes. Each provider provides different options, so talking with your provider is the best way to discover what you should choose. This is what my friend who owns a roof installation company in Lilburn did and it served him well on his trip.
Stack up the data: data is likely the most important part of having a smart phone when traveling internationally. It gives you quick access to Google maps and allows you to review restaurant ratings when you are unable to connect to Wi-Fi.
Smart phones make dialing internationally easy: that every country has an entrance and exit code, when you have a smart phone, the exit code is not needed. You simply dial + and then the entrance code of the country being called before entering the phone number. In countries located in North America, the entrance code is one.
Use airplane mode: if you desire to use your smart phone while avoiding roaming charges, and you don’t have a plan that includes international calls, no problem. Go to the settings in your smart phone and turn on airplane mode. You will not be able to send or receive calls without charge, but this will allow you to connect to Wi-Fi and use some other applications to connect with your friends and family.
Traveling internationally doesn’t mean you can’t stay connected with friends and family. By following the simple tips above, you can use your smart phone internationally to keep in touch with those you love.
